What Are GLO Field Notes?

General Land Office field notes are the original handwritten records created by federal surveyors as they established the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) in the 18th and 19th centuries. Every stream, bearing tree, terrain feature, and section corner was recorded by chain distance along each survey line. These records are the legal foundation for land ownership across the American West.
